Johnny Sexton absorbed on Rugby World Cup win, not rankings
DUBLIN – Ireland needs to emulate their enemies this
weekend, South Africa’s Springbok, and win the Rugby World Cup if they are to
merit being called the best side in the world, captain Johnny Sexton said on
Tuesday. The 37-year-old iconic fly-half stimulated his side to a historic
series win in New Zealand in July that saw them rise to the top of the
positions.

“Honestly, it’s not somewhat that we t much,” Sexton told
reporters. “It’s not a goal to become No. 1 in the world. That might sound
unwise. “In some sports, it is — golf, tennis — but in rugby the rankings substance

teams start properly look at you and they go, ‘How are we going to mess up this
Ireland squad? How are we combat this?'” he said.
“We’ve got to do it improved and we’ve got to evolve a

at next year’s Rugby World Cup — with Scotland’s presence making it a tough ask
to finish in the top two to progress.

He is also mindful of Ireland’s unacceptable record at the
quadrennial showpiece, having never reached the semifinals. South Africa, by alteration,
has won it three times. “If we got a win on Saturday it would be countless, if
we don’t then we learn from it,” he said. “We’re going to study both ways.
“We’re going to study South Africa, we’re going to see what
it’s like to play against this type of team, we haven’t played against them in an
insufficient year and I think it’s what we need.” Sexton’s wealth of experience
at flyhalf is in stark contrast to his Springbok conflicting number on Saturday, Damian Willemse, who has started just two tests.
Willemse, 24, got the playmaker role because the first
excellent Handre Pollard is recovering from a knee operation, and substitute
Elton Jantjies is commerce with personal problems. “He’s only played a couple
of games at 10 for South Africa but he’s random,” said Sexton. “He’s got
fantastic footwork, he has a good kicking game, he’s robust, he’s fast clearly.
“Some traits that you wouldn’t usually associate with a 10, but he’s a
brilliant player.”
Making

McCloskey
Ulster center Stuart McCloskey has said being including the Ireland
Rugby World Cup squad next year was a factor in him spreading his contract with
the club. McCloskey has won six Ireland caps, the first being against England
in 2016. Having worked a new deal with Ulster last year, McCloskey hopes to add
to his caps total with the autumn Tests, Six Nations, and World Cup pending

McCloskey added he'd be "disgruntled" to miss out
on the fall series squad. The 30-year-old said: "I suppose one of the
details I stayed around at Ulster when I signed on for another three years, was
so that I could maybe have a go at a World Cup and maybe get a few more lids.

"I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought of that before
I was employed. So what’s driving me on, but also to be the best I can be? McCloskey,
who is in South Africa with Ulster ahead of Saturday's United Rugby Championship
game against the Sharks, added: "I've played expert rugby for nine years
now and I feel like I'm just receiving better, so I'll just keep on assertive
and see how good I can be."
Andy Farrell
Ireland Rugby World Cup head coach Andy Farrell is
predictable to name his Ireland squad for the November tests against South
Africa, Fiji, and Australia on Wednesday.
The injury ruled McCloskey out of assortment for the 2022
Six Nations, and while he did not make Farrell's squad for the summer Tests
against New Zealand, he contained in the 30-24 win over the Maori All Blacks
and has ongoing this season well with Ulster.
"Bundee [Aki]'s out there, he's been banned for six or
seven weeks so he can't play until the last game of the block or smooth he
might not make any of the games," McCloskey said when requested about his odds
of making the squad for the November Tests. "I don't know if shock is
the right word, but I'd be fairly disappointed, particularly with the form I've
shown. I played well in the game over in New Zealand in the temporary when I
was called out late."
