Prospects
Pakistan has been drawn in Group 2 of the Super 12s,
alongside India, South Africa, and Bangladesh, they have also been combined by
the Netherlands from the First Round and the final team will be obvious today. To
back up last year’s efforts, where they hurt overthrow to eventual winners
Australia in the semi-final, they will need to surface in the top two of their
group.
They come into the competition in form though, winning four
of their five competitions in the tri-series with New Zealand and Bangladesh
and although they eventually suffered a 4-3 defeat in the seven-match T20
series with England, there were plenty of acts in there to please head Coach
Saqlain Mushtaq.
There is no unwillingness that Pakistan will be
among the front runners and will be expecting to advance past the Super 12s and
into the semi-finals once again – although clashes with South Africa and India
will be tough.
ICC Men's T20 World Cup
Pakistan’s Men’s T20 World Cup history is nonentity short of
outstanding, reaching the semi-finals in five of the seven versions. They
affected the final of the inaugural competition in South Africa in 2007, losing
by just five runs to India after Gautam Gambhir’s 75 enthused the Indian side
to conquest.
Two years later, they were the side thrilling the trophy,
with Shahid Afridi’s unbeaten 54 and Abdul Razzaq’s three for 20 seeing Pakistan to
an eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka at Lord’s. Despite their unresolved
record, that is the last time Pakistan reached the final, suffering
back-to-back semi-final defeats in 2010 and 2012 against Australia and Sri
Lanka correspondingly.
The 2014 T20 World Cup saw Pakistan miss out on
the semi-finals for the first time, and in 2016 they again wasted out, import a
long five-year wait until last year’s competition in the UAE and Oman – in
which they touched their first semi-final in nine years, but despite Mohammad
Rizwan’s 67 and Shadab Khan’s four for 26, they endured yet another semi-final victory

Best Batsmen
There are no prizes for predicting Pakistan’s T20 World
Cup’s best batter, as he is also the world’s best batter, with Rizwan sitting
on top of the ICC MRF Tyres Men’s T20I Player Batter Rankings. Averaging
a phenomenal 52.34, Rizwan has one hundred and 22 fifties from just 62 innings,
with a new 69 in the win over Bangladesh last week showcasing his form heading
into the T20 World Cup.
That bodes well for the Super 12s, with Pakistan opposite
Bangladesh, while against their other key adversaries in the Super 12s, India
and South Africa, Rizwan averages an outrageous 96.5 and 62.16 correspondingly.
Rizwan has formed what is confidently the best opening batting pairing in world
cricket with Babar Azam, whom himself sits third in the current MRF Tyres T20I
batting rankings.
Pakistan’s captain averages 43.66, slightly less than
Rizwan, but he has racked up two hundred and 29 fifties and like Rizwan, comes
into the World Cup in outstanding form, scoring 55 in that victory over
Bangladesh, while also scoring his second T20 international hundred against
England, scoring 110 as Rizwan hit 88 not out in a ten-wicket win.
Best Bowlers
Pakistan may have two of the best hitters on the earth,
but they are not short of outstanding bowling as New Zealand and Bangladesh lately
found out. Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan are two to keep an eye on, but
there is plenty of bowling in the Pakistan line-up, with Mohammad
Wasim and Mohammad Nawaz in exact top form in recent weeks and Shaheen Shah
Afridi coming back from the wound for this competition.

Haris is a man who will strike fear into top order hitters
around the globe though, averaging just 23.03 and taking 64 wickets in his 50
matches, but he is combined by Pakistan’s extraordinary young all-rounder
Shadab. Just 24, Shadab has already been a major part of
the Pakistan T20 World Cup squad with both bat and ball for several years,
taking 87 wickets at an average of 22.29 since his debut five years ago and he
is once
again going to be a key member of the side, with his leg breaks showing very active.

Bangladesh is observing
to shake their tag as underachievers when they begin their ICC Men’s T20 World
Cup campaign in Australia. Despite being ever-presents at the tournament since
its first staging in 2007, the Tigers have won just seven of their 33 competitions.
A recent tri-series with Pakistan and New Zealand failed to crop a single
victory and two changes have been made to the team off the back of those four

The struggle will only get fiercer when they venture down under, with India,
Pakistan, and South Africa for a house in Group 2, in conditions that could not
be any more different from what they are familiar with at home. So how will
Bangladesh fare at the World Cup – will they come released again or can they
make it a World Cup to remember?
2022 prospects
Bangladesh has an undistinguishable record from each of the
last three T20 World Cups – having won just two competitions, none of which
have come at the Super 12 stage. Unlike each of the three preceding competitions,
Bangladesh will not be starting its campaign at the first-round stage.
The opening fitting for Bangladesh is against the runner-up
of Group A – one of Namibia, Netherlands, or Sri Lanka. A victory there would
instill sureness ahead of a crucial match-up with South Africa, who are the
lowest-ranked side among the other automatic qualifiers in Group 2.
That has to be a game that the squad looks to board and a win in Sydney would
leave them in a fantastic location ahead of a match-up with the Group B winners
in Brisbane. Wins will be hard to come by thereafter, with fixtures against preceding
winners India and Pakistan. So the realistic ambition for Bangladesh has
to be refining on that record of two wins before those final two matches.
T20 World Cup
History
Arguably Bangladesh’s best T20 World Cup instant came in
their very first fixture. Back in 2007 against a highly-fancied West Indies
side which comprised the likes of Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and Ravi
Rampaul, Bangladesh chased down the Windies’ total of 164 with ease, packaging
up victory with 12 balls to spare. Shakib Al Hasan took four wickets that day
and donated with the bat too.
It took another seven years for Bangladesh to taste achievement again in the
competition, as they went winless through each of 2009, 2010, and 2012 World
Cups. The unwelcome streak ended on home soil in 2014 with wins over
Afghanistan and Nepal but a defeat against Hong Kong in their final group
fixture seemed to deflate the team ahead of the Super 10 stage, where they lost
all four fittings.
Bangladesh T20 World
Cup
They advanced as group stage victors once again in 2016 but lost all four
of their Super 10 stage matches for the second competition running. Their 2021
campaign then got off to the worst likely start with a defeat to Scotland in
Oman. They healthier from there to progress to the Super 12s as group
runners-up but struggled afterward, with a three-run defeat against the West
Indies the closest they came to a win over a Full Member nation.
Current form
Arrangements began in earnest in July with a pair of three-match series,
the first of which came against the Windies. That ended in a 2-0 series defeat
after the first contest was wild due to rain; Afif Hossain was the shining
light of the series, with scores of 51 and 34 from his two innings.
Zimbabwe was next and the Chevrons pulled off an astonishing victory in the
opening fixture in Harare as Bangladesh finished 17 runs short chasing 205.
It appeared as if normality had been restored with a comfortable seven-wicket
victory in the second contest, but Zimbabwe once again coasted home in the
final T20 and repaid home with a 2-1 series win. A different rivalry and
location failed to yield a change in results, with three conventional defeats
in the Asia Cup contested in the UAE.
The side did then come out on top in a two-competition
series with the Asia Cup hosts but was firmly third best in their tri-series
with Pakistan and New Zealand.
Since the previous T20 World Cup, they have won four of their 18 T20 matches.
Best batsmen
Shakib provides a wealth of knowledge and quality in the middle order. He and
Litton Das have proven themselves to be the side’s most reliable batters since
the last World Cup. There is no settled opening partnership, however, with four
different mixtures used during the tri-series in New Zealand. Soumya Sarkar was
a late addition to the squad after exciting in that series and could be one to
watch for his violent intent at the top of the order.

Best bowlers
Bangladesh T20 World Cup Player Mahedi Hasan is the highest ranked
Bangladesh bowler rendering to the MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Bowling Rankings
but there is no place for him among the stable of spin bowlers. In his place, imagine
Nasum Ahmed and Shakib to try and spin their team to victory – and jealous task
on flat tracks in Australia.
That means that greater accountability will fall on the
shoulders of left-arm quick Shoriful Islam, who at the age of just 21 has the coincidental
to make himself a hero after finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker in
Bangladesh’s series in the UAE.
